An Introduction
Chatham is as Americana as it gets. Chock full of history dating back to the Revolutionary War, the Main Street commercial district is very traditional and features many mom and pop businesses and shops. An independent pharmacy even has a counter in the middle of the store where you can sit and have an ice cream, a shake or some candy. Yes, really. Truly the epitome of what you think of when you imagine a perfect small town, Chatham is charming, scenic and delightful. It is also cosmopolitan as it has its own train station and easy access to Manhattan, and acclaimed restaurants. Good schools and lots of green space, Chatham is actually two municipalities – Chatham Borough and Chatham Township – run together as one with merged schools and public services. Sometimes referred to as the Chathams, it is the best of old and new. The spectacular Giralda Farms Preserve comprises 136 acres and is the former Geraldine Rockefeller Dodge estate. Visitors enjoy hiking, biking and cross country skiing there. Shunpike Park – or Castle Park as it is popularly known – is a favored destination by the young set and offers a castle to explore. Reasoner Park is home to the recently restored Chatham clock tower which seems to stand guard over the park. The Chatham Community Players has 95 years of bringing smiles to the community. There is an Art League of the Chathams. Great schools, recreation, arts, commutability, natural beauty, preserved history, make families flock to Chatham.
